Local Captain Tips

To help you make the most of your time on the water, here are a few local insights to keep your trip smooth, safe, and enjoyable.

Best Sandbars & Hangout Spots

Jewfish Key Sandbar

One of the most popular sandbars in the area. Located between Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island. Great for anchoring, swimming, and relaxing. Can get busy on weekends, especially mid-day.

Passage Key

More secluded and natural compared to other spots. Located at the mouth of Tampa Bay. Beautiful water and great for a quieter experience. Note: This is a protected wildlife area — no landing on the island.

Beer Can Island (Greer Island)

Located at the north end of Longboat Key. Mix of beach and sandbar depending on tide. Great for hanging out, exploring, and relaxing. Areas to Use Caution (Shallow Water & Low Tide)Large areas around Palma Sola Bay and near the Intracoastal can get very shallow. Grass flats and sandbars shift frequently — what’s deep one day may not be the next. Use marked channels whenever possible, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area.

Low Tide Awareness

Many sandbars and flats become exposed or extremely shallow at low tide. If you anchor during higher tide, make sure you’ll still have enough depth when leaving. It’s easy to get stuck if you're not paying attention to tide changes.

Boating Safety Tips

Watch for manatees and adhere to posted slow-speed zones. Keep an eye out for crab traps, especially outside marked channels. Afternoon storms can build quickly in warmer months — plan accordingly. Always check weather and tide conditions before heading out.
